Digital Season Tickets for Sports Clubs
A season ticket is a promise: pay once in July, walk in at every home fixture. The hard part has never been selling it — it's the twenty-odd match days afterwards, when a volunteer on a turnstile has to decide whether the laminated card in front of them is this season's, last season's, or somebody else's. Digital season tickets put the ticket in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and make that decision a scan.
What a digital season ticket actually is
It's a wallet pass, issued to one named holder, carrying a unique QR code and an expiry date at the end of the season. The holder adds it to their phone in one tap from an email. At the gate you scan it and get a live answer: valid for this season, or not.
The difference from a printed season ticket is that the code is checked against live records rather than simply read. A ticket that's been refunded, revoked, or has run past its end date fails the scan — it doesn't just look valid.
The three problems it solves
- Distribution. No print run, no envelopes, no "my season ticket hasn't arrived and we're at home on Saturday". Payment clears, ticket lands by email, holder taps once.
- Sharing. Printed season tickets circulate. Each digital ticket carries its holder's unique identifier, and the re-entry check flags a code that's already been scanned at today's fixture — so one ticket can't admit four people through four turnstiles.
- Replacement. A lost printed ticket means a reprint, a fee, and an argument. A lost phone means resending an email.
Attendance data you couldn't get before
Season tickets are the one product where clubs genuinely don't know if the customer is using what they bought — the money arrives in July regardless. That's fine until renewal season, when you're emailing everyone the same letter with no idea who came to twenty games and who came to two.
| Printed season ticket | Digital season ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Attendance per holder | Unknown | Every scan logged |
| Fixture-by-fixture crowd | Gate cash only | Counted at the turnstile |
| Renewal targeting | One email to everyone | Different email to lapsed attenders |
| Proof of use in a dispute | None | Timestamped scans |
A holder who's attended twice since October is a renewal you're about to lose, and you now know that in February rather than in June. How to track membership card usage covers the reporting side.
Concessions, juniors and family tickets
Most clubs price several categories — adult, concession, junior, family, disabled supporter plus carer. Give each its own card design and the category is printed on the ticket itself, visible to whoever's on the gate. That stops the two failure modes of paper: a concession ticket used by an adult, and a steward having to challenge somebody about their age. Five designs come with the Pro plan; larger clubs use Pro Plus for unlimited tickets and designs.
What this is not
Worth saying plainly. A digital season ticket in a wallet pass is a season-long credential — it is not a box office. It doesn't sell single match tickets, allocate seats, or handle away-fixture ticketing. If you need reserved seating and per-fixture sales, you need a ticketing platform. If what you actually need is "the two hundred people who paid for the season can get in, and nobody else can", this is that, at a fraction of the cost and complexity.
Does it work without signal?
Yes on the supporter's side. Once the ticket is in the wallet it's stored on the phone and the QR code displays without a connection — which matters at grounds where twelve hundred people arrive at once and the mobile network gives up. The scanning device needs a connection to verify live status. Most clubs scan on a phone or tablet on the ground's wifi. There's more detail in the QR code membership cards guide.
Rolling it out for next season
- Build a ticket design per category with the club badge, an expiry date at the end of the season, and a QR code field.
- Import last season's holders by CSV and send tickets as renewals are paid.
- Test the turnstile flow at a friendly or a cup tie before the league season starts — scan fifty people and find the queue's real bottleneck.
- Chase the holders who haven't installed theirs before the first home fixture.
Clubs running a broader membership alongside season tickets should read digital membership cards for football clubs, which covers the supporters' club and junior sections too.
