Digital Membership Cards for Football Clubs
Non-league and grassroots football clubs have a membership problem that bigger clubs solved with money: a turnstile staffed by volunteers, a supporters' club with its own list, junior teams with their own parents' WhatsApp groups, and no single place that says who's a member. Digital membership cards for football clubs give every one of those groups a card on their phone that can be checked at the gate in a second.
Match day at a small ground
Saturday, three o'clock. There's a queue at the turnstile, one volunteer taking cash, another looking for a laminated list of members entitled to free entry. Somebody's card is at home. Somebody else's membership lapsed in August and nobody knows. The game kicks off and half the queue is still outside.
A scannable digital card compresses that to: phone out, scan, in. The scan checks live membership status rather than reading a number, so a lapsed membership fails at the gate instead of walking through on the strength of an old card.
The four memberships a football club actually runs
- Supporters' club members — the core list, usually annual.
- Season ticket holders — entitled to entry at every home fixture.
- Junior section / academy families — subs paid monthly, high turnover.
- Players, committee and volunteers — the people who need clubhouse and ground access without paying at the gate.
Each gets its own card design, so the person on the gate sees which is which without asking. Five designs and 100 active cards come with the Pro plan at £15 a month; clubs with a big junior section or a full supporters' list go to Pro Plus for unlimited.
If season tickets are the main use case, there's a dedicated guide: digital season tickets for sports clubs.
Stopping one membership admitting four people
The honest objection to any phone-based pass: what stops a screenshot going round? Two things. Each card carries the member's own identifier, so a shared code checks in as that member — not as a second person. And the re-entry check flags a code that's already been scanned at today's fixture, so one membership can't quietly admit a group through the turnstile.
That's more control than a plastic card, which can be passed back over the fence with no record at all.
Junior sections and monthly subs
Junior football churns harder than almost any other club membership: players move clubs, siblings join, families stop paying without saying so. Plastic cards are hopeless here — nobody reprints a card for a nine-year-old who joined in October. Digital cards cost nothing per card, issue the same day, and can be revoked the moment subs stop. The junior secretary spends their time on football rather than card orders.
What the gate data tells you
Every scan is logged, so at the end of the season you know your actual attendance by fixture and by member — not the gate cash total, but who came. That changes a few conversations:
| Question | Before | With scan data |
|---|---|---|
| Which fixtures draw a crowd? | Gate takings, roughly | Attendance per fixture |
| Are season ticket holders using them? | Unknown | Scans per holder |
| Who's drifted before renewal? | Found out at renewal | Visible weeks earlier |
| Is the junior section growing? | Gut feel | Active cards over time |

Sponsors and the back of the card
Club sponsorship is usually sold as a shirt, a hoarding, or a page in the programme. A digital membership card is another surface — your branding on a card that every member opens on their phone, carried in the same wallet as their bank cards. Custom branding is included from the Pro plan. It won't fund a new stand, but it's a real asset to offer a local sponsor, and it costs the club nothing to produce.
Getting it running before the season
Pre-season is the window. Import your supporters' list and junior families by CSV, build a card per membership type with the club badge, and email the cards out with the fixture list — members open that email anyway. Then check who hasn't installed theirs before the first home game and chase them once.
How to send membership cards by email covers getting those emails delivered rather than binned.
Try it at your ground
Start free — five cards, no card details. Build the club's card, send it to your phone, and scan it at the turnstile before you commit to anything. Plans from £0.
